Thank you to all who helped with the Farewell Party. I felt deep honor, as did my mother and sisters. Thank you to those who prepared food, served, cleaned, etc. Thanks, too, for the generous donation to Pennies for Seminarians - your gifts totaled almost $1050. I am trying to send "thank you"s to those that sent/gave a card, but ran into a small 'glitch' - I thought I had plenty, but ran out. Please be patient as I get more (but it may be a few weeks).

Pastor's Notes for June 23
Dear Parishioners,
Congratulations to Haylee Jean Williams, daughter of Ski and Naomi Williams who was baptized last weekend at OLV.
After 6 wonderful years, this is my last weekend in this AFC. It has been a profound honor to serve you, and to be with you. I leave with sadness, certainly, but also with gratitude. I look back on my time here and consider all the weddings, baptisms, first communions, confirmations, and funerals we have had together. I think of the visits and the sick calls. I recall the conversations. These I will carry with me. I leave behind no regrets, and take with me no anger. Please, if I have harmed you in anyway, know that it was unintentional, and please forgive me.
I will be making the move on Wednesday, following the 8:30 Mass. At the time of writing, I would appreciate a few volunteers to help me unload at St. Peter (there will be 3-5 parishioners from St. Peter to help once we get there). Thank you to Art Rohlik for the use of his trailer and for his towing it.

Pastor's Notes for June 16
Dear Parishioners,
Our deepest sympathy to Rosie VanHecke and Family on the death of Bud, and to Margaret and Craig Palan on the death of both her father and mother, Leo and Deloris Klinnert (he died last week, and her mother died this week). May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
Happy Father's Day to all fathers and grandfathers. I think we sometimes forget what an important task fatherhood is. Think about the models displayed by in movies or on TV - either fathers are idiotic wimps, or domineering and mean, if at all present. Very seldom do we witness a good model. Fathers take their model from God the Father Himself - loving, compassionate and merciful, but also just. The fathers (and in reality all men) who follow His model are able to rise above the insipid model that this world gives. Those that do are able to guide their families in love. I am thankful for the strong fathers that are present in our AFC, and one of my most fervent prayers - that all fathers continue to follow the model of God.
This is the penultimate 'Pastor's Notes" that I will write here. Hard to believe. I am mostly packed at this time, with my clothing and some needed items yet to pack. The house looks bare, and I am already tired of boxes. I want to thank Art R. for the use of his trailer, as well as volunteering to drive it to St. Peter on the 26th. At this point, yet, I don't know quite what I plan on doing as far as asking for additional help to load or unload - perhaps more next week. I know, though, that I plan on having almost everything loaded so that I can clean on the afternoon of the 25th...

Dear Parishioners,
Congratulations to Anthony Rohlik and Kaitlyn Lubben who are married this weekend. May the Lord bless them with many happy years of wedded bliss.
We have been notified by Bishop LeVoir of a change in the suggested offering of Mass intention stipends beginning July 1. After that time, the suggested offering for all future stipends for Masses will be $10 instead of the current $5. Every Mass intention that has already been received will be offered for $5 stipend. Again, this is a suggested offering, so more or less may be offered. Practically, this means a little extra account on the part of the priests or whoever records and pays out the stipends, but little else. It is also good to remind everyone at this time what the stipends are and are not. You are not 'buying' the Mass or the graces of the Mass, but are giving a gift to the priest to offer Mass for a particular intention. These intentions could be for the deceased (as most often they are), for someone who is sick or in need of prayer, as an act of thanksgiving for healing or an anniversary. In the past, Mass stipends have been a major part of the priests' salaries, but that is not the case any longer in our country, though in some parts of the world, this is their sole income. The stipends are part of a priest's taxable income. The tradition of offering a stipend was a way of encouraging priests to offer Mass every day, which is why only one stipend may be accepted per day. (Note, too, that typically only one Mass may be offered per day, and no more than two on a regular day, and no more than three on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation. ) It is the pastor's duty to offer a Mass "Pro populo" - for the people of his Parish(es) - every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation. In our Area Faith Community, we have a separate Mass account which is used for this, and all stipends are deposited into that account (St. Anne's Mass Account) first to record them, and then a check is written from that account to the priest who offers it. Thank you for writing checks out to the account to make this easier!

Pastor's Notes for June 2
Dear Parishioners,
Happy Feast of Corpus Christi. This feast gives us time to reflect on the great mystery of the Eucharist, the Body of Christ. It is a mystery that we can not grasp fully - how God becomes man, to become the "Bread of Life". Most of the texts for the Mass this weekend are from St. Thomas Aquinas, who was tasked by the Pope to write them. The texts are beautiful and eloquent, theologically rich and poetic, but even with all of that insight, St. Thomas knew he fell short of capturing the grandness of the Eucharist. It reminds me that I cannot come too casually to the Eucharist, neither in my participation in Mass or reception of Him in the Eucharist. We need to prepare ourselves, to reflect on the state of our souls and our ability to receive the Eucharist worthily and well.
This Friday, we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart, and we will have the First Friday Mass (typically dedicated to the Sacred Heart already) at St. Mary's. I hope that many would attend Mass in thanksgiving for the Love that Jesus reveals to us in His Sacred Heart, which was pierced for us.
As the School year ends, I thank all of our generous benefactors again form your time, talent, and treasure that you have given so generously to St. Anne's School. Please know my deepest appreciation.

Pastor's Notes for May 26
Dear Parishioners,
First, my apologies for not publishing sooner the following: Congratulations to Jaxon Daniel Bond, son of Brad and Andrea (Ourada) and to Jacinta Christine Turbes, daughter of Andrew and Jaye Turbes who were both baptized now two weeks ago. May they grow in love of Christ!
Congratulations again to all of our new graduates! May the Lord bless all your endeavors.
We celebrate Memorial Day this Monday. I hope that you take advantage of one of the civil ceremonies, in addition to offering Mass for the deceased, wounded, active, and retired military men and women. This day is also a beautiful one on which to visit graves of loved ones.
Liturgically, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity this weekend. This feast provides us an opportunity to reflect on the Trinity's internal reality - who God is in Himself. He is three separate persons, perfectly united in one being. Our mortal minds will never grasp that full reality, but what we can grasp is that these three persons are co-eternal. The Father is ever begetting the Son, and the Son is ever begotten, while the Spirit proceeds to and from the Father and Son. The Trinity is the model for family - perfectly united and equal, yet yet different persons. The Trinity is communitarian and creative - so is the family. As we worship the Holy Trinity, let us continue to strive to follow His model in our family lives.

Pastor's Notes for May 19
Dear Parishioners,
Our deepest sympathy to Bea Shemon and her family on the tragic death of her great-grandson. May he rest in peace, and may his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents feel the love of our Savior during this time of pain.
This weekend is Pentecost, and with it, the end of the Easter season. The Holy Spirit still comes upon us, filling us with grace and power to proclaim boldly our faith. It is this Spirit that we need more, the Spirit to make our hearts large (as Pope Francis stated in a recent homily). The world needs our witness, young and old, woman or man, married, ordained, consecrated, single, no matter race, culture, or mother-tongue. Only the Spirit to hold these all in balance. Following God, being filled with the Spirit, therefore does not allow us to discriminate among human beings. It does, however, call us to discriminate among actions, and to be reconciled when we sin, and help others find reconciliation.
This week has been disappointing, but not surprising. Like so much other things, we call to mind that "Legal ≠ right" all the time. Saying so, though, does not justify violence or personal attacks. We need to work hard to proclaim God's plan for Marriage, both as a sacrament and as a natural institution. Come, Holy Spirit!

Dear Parishioners,
Our sympathy to the families of Alvin Hirsch and Reynold Baune. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
This weekend, we celebrate the feast of the Ascension. We remember that Christ goes to the Father, and in doing so promises to send the Holy Spirit and to continue to guide and govern the Church. He does not abandon us. Of course, the celebration of the Ascension also means Pentecost and the conclusion of the Easter season is just around the corner. I did not remember to invite you to join in the novena to the Holy Spirit last weekend which began on Thursday of last week (the original feast of the Ascension), but it is not to late to begin asking the Holy Spirit for His gifts this Pentecost. Perhaps the following prayer would be helpful:
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
V. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.

Pastor's Notes for May 5
Dear Parishioners,
This last week, Fr. van de Crommert came for a visit and to see the parishes and rectories. He is very happy to be coming, and sees that we have great buildings that are orderly and maintained. He is looking forward to serving all of you, and is very much looking forward to having 'younger' parishes as the median age in Olivia is higher than here! He will be doing minor things in the house between moves such as painting and having new flooring installed (both are needed)! Please continue to welcome him.
There may be some last flurry of activities in June, too, at St. Anne's. We are seeing damage to the steps on the west of the Church, and will be removing them and replacing them. We are also aware that the windows need new caulk so that will be done shortly. Finally, the lights in the basement need to be replaced as the light bulbs are getting more difficult to purchase - we will installing the high efficiency lights as we did in the school a few years ago. To my knowledge, the other parishes are in good shape.
A final invitation: Sunday, May 5th, at 6 pm, we will be watching the movie For Greater Glory which is the true story of the Cristada movement. It was a resonse to the implementation of anti-Catholic and anti-clerical laws of the Mexican government. While a violent time, the movie not only depicts the violence, but also the brave and non-violent response that so many made. It is a moving story. Bring cushions and perhaps kleenex. Feel free to bring snacks - some will be provided.

Pastor's Notes for April 28
Dear Parishioners,
Our sympathy to Don Schwarz and family on the death of his father, Tom. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
As we enter May this week, we call to mind that it is a month to remember in a special way the Blessed Mother. While we may not have fresh, homegrown flowers to offer yet, we can offer her a bouquet of prayers. She is the perfect disciple of Jesus Christ - she responded to God's will perfectly. She intercedes for us because of that, and she leads us without fail to her Divine Son. If we are not in the habit of praying a rosary daily, this month during this Year of Faith provides a wonderful reason to begin.
Hopefully, spring will be here soon. I am sure all farmers and gardeners are getting anxious to get out in the soil soon. My hope, however, is that once it begins, we can remember to honor the Lord and refrain from unnecessary work on Sundays. I am reminded of the legends of St. Isidore who went to daily Mass, despite the feudal lords hostility toward the faith and demands that he be more productive. The oxen plowed the fields without human guidance while he was giving hi first fruits to the Lord. I do not think it wise to turn your tractors over to the angels so you can attend Mass, but all the same give the Lord His due!

Congratulations to Levi Donald Salfer, son of Steven and Kayla; and Dalanie Catherine Daub, daughter of Paul and Rebecca, who were baptized in the last weeks.
Congratulations, too, to newly confirmed members of our parishes. May the Holy Spirit pour out all his blessings on them and make them full active members of the Church.
On Monday, Pope Francis gave a homily during which he stated that calumny (gossip) is a work of the devil: "We are all sinners; all of us. We all commit sins. But calumny is something else. It is of course a sin, too, but it is something more. Calumny aims to destroy the work of God, and calumny comes from a very evil thing: it is born of hatred. And hate is the work of Satan. Calumny destroys the work of God in people, in their souls. Calumny uses lies to get ahead. And let us be in no doubt, eh?: Where there is calumny, there is Satan himself." Everyone deserves the right to their reputation. Whether true or false, any spreading of harmful statements or personal attacks destroy that reputation. I find Pope Francis' words as a gentle reminder to think before I speak.

Pastor's Notes for April 14
Dear parishioners,
As I forgot to email my notes before I left, I am taking some time away from retreat to do so. So far, the retreat has been prayerful personally, and mostly academic in the conferences, but they are helping me begin the hard transition into a larger parish/workload setting while helping me form words of gratitude for what I have enjoyed these last 6 years. My future predecessor is here, so we have had some talks about the assignment, so I am much more at ease. At this point, though, I will be packing most is my stuff for short term (hopefully) storage and living in a temporary housing situation as a rectory is obtained (the current pastor and past pastor both bought houses in St. Peter). Hopefully, I will be moving into a permanent home within a few months. Fr. John is also here, and is very much excited about coming. Fr. Van de Crommert is not here, so I will touch base with him later.
Please keep our Confirmation candidates in prayer as they prepare for this wonderful Sacrament next Saturday.

Pastor's Notes for April 7
Dear Parishioners,
Happy Easter! We continue our Easter rejoicing on this second Sunday of Easter weekend, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. It is a season to remember the overwhelming mercy of God, more powerful than our sin! We rejoice in that.
Our sympathy to the family of Jerry Frericks. May his soul and the soul of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
Congratulations to our first Communicants this weekend. May their reception of Jesus fill them with His grace and love.
Please keep our priests in prayer as most of us will be on retreat this week.
This week, I received formal word that I am being reassigned, effective June 26. It is with sadness I go, but as I have so often prayed, may I never get in the way of the Gospel. I will be serving in St. Peter and Nicollet. There are two priests being assigned to our AFC: Fr. Paul van de Crommert as Parochial Administrator and Fr. John Ekwoanya as Parochial Vicar. Please welcome them graciously. They come with unique gifts and talents that I lack, and between the two of them will be able to do things that I am unable to do, such as regular visits to the sick and homebound, and perhaps even additional Masses and devotions. You will notice that Fr. van de Crommert has a different title than pastor as this is a temporary assignment for him.
These next weeks will be filled with lasts for me with you. I have loved it here, and consider the time we have had together a tremendous blessing. I know that I am a better priest and pastor by having been here these last years - and I hope that every priest that follows me has that same experience. Too often, we focus only on the formative role that the pastor has on his parish, but the truth is that the parish plays a major formative role on the priest as well! Thank you (with many more to follow)!

Pastors Notes for Easter
Dear Parishioners,
Happy Resurrection Day! The Lord has risen, He has risen indeed, just as He said! Let us rejoice and be glad.
We know that the Resurrection of Christ changes everything. I still recall a beautiful homily of Bishop Lucker's at the Easter Vigil (in 1996, so it must have been really good). He quoted a saint who said Christ is risen, man is saved, and the world is changed! As we go about our Easter season, even if there is snow on the ground yet, even if there is still a chill in the air, we know that there is new life, and that eternity beacons.
But we also know that while we have joy, there is still sadness, too. We pray for the repose of the souls of Sr. Mary Schilling, who died some time ago (and my apologies to the Schilling family for forgetting to a sympathy in the bulletin until now); Gerald Forbes, father of Diane Swedzinski; and Lynn Larson, brother of Gail Fischer and Marge Weber. May the Resurrection of Christ raise their souls to eternity.

Palm Sunday
Dear Parishioners,
Here we are in Holy Week already. That does not mean, however, that our Lenten journeys are finished, but now they grow more intense - more intense in prayer and fasting most especially. This week's liturgies have a pride of place in the Church and in my heart - how blessed are they. We gather, recalling the model of loving service of Jesus Christ in washing the feet of the disciples and giving Himself as the Bread of Life and the Blood of Salvation. We continue on Good Friday, coming to the foot of the cross and adoring the Lord who was crucified for our salvation. We gather in the darkness of night, recalling the night that sin and death lost to the Glory of the Resurrection… Certainly these are holy days. Please make every effort to keep them!
As part of that, there are only days left for participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We have a communal penance service on Sunday, March 24 at 1 at OLV and at 2:30 at St. Anne's. There will be private confessions Monday 5:30-6:25 pm at St. Anne's, Tuesday at 7:30 am at OLV, Wednesday at 7:30 am at St. Anne's, and Thursday at noon at St. Anne's. Please do not wait until the last minute, and do not delay. Do not worry if it has been a while, either. Be reconciled to God, and don't delay!

Pastor's Notes for March 3
Dear Parishioners,
Our deepest sympathy to the families of Tillie Guetter, Mavis Hoffman, Pat (Kidrowski) Morin, Linda Stolp, and Shane Fisher (Great nephew of Harrold Frericks). May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
We hear in our readings of both the tree that does produce, and the burning bush. We call to mind that we are in need of conversion to produce fruit of righteousness. But in produce the fruit, we call to mind, too, that it is the fire of the Holy Spirit that is in work in us, burning in us without destroying us. This Sunday afternoon at St. Anne's, we have a profound opportunity to pray for such conversion as we have a day of Adoration. Please come and go as you are able, but this whole afternoon (after the 10 am Mass until 7pm) is a day of praying in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. I find that no time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament is wasted - even just sitting quietly can be powerful. Other suggestions beside praying the Rosary of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy include praying over the Sunday readings (or reviewing them in prayer), reading a devotional, or another scripture passage. You could also pray a form of ACTS - Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, and Supplication - taking time for each form of prayer. Again, no time is wasted, even if you simply are in the presence of Christ, allowing Him to look at you.

Pastor's Notes for February 24
Dear Parishioners,
This weekend, we hear of the transfiguration of Jesus. It might seem odd hearing this during the penitential season, but the Church reminds us that we are entering Lent because of the goodness of Christ. He give the apostles a glimpse of His divinity, and it reminds them that He is God, so prepares them for the scandal of the Cross. As we hear this episode, let it inspire us to remember that it is the Glory of Christ that inspires us.
This Thursday, of course, is the last day of Pope Benedict's papacy. He has certainly served the Church well, and these last eight years have certainly taken their toll on him. While disappointed to see him go, I am glad that he will be able to live the rest of his days in prayer and study as he has desired for so many years. We also began praying for the Cardinals as they gather for the conclave to elect the next pope.
These last weeks, there has been much written about the necessary changes in the Church. Everyone has their pets - whether it is a liberal or conservative stance. All the same, I like Pope Benedict's list of what must change: you and me! We are the Church, and so often we are the problem. Instead of listening to the Holy Spirit with a grasp of our spiritual heritage, we follow the whims of the world. Instead of giving an authentic witness of holiness and joy, we too often look too much like citizens of this world with no focus on eternity. Yes, we must change if the Church is to be strong. So, during this season of Lent, we ask the Lord to change our hearts.

Our sympathy to the family of Stacy Daub. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
This week's announcement by Pope Benedict XVI certainly took me by surprise as he renunciates his position as Pope, so that someone more able bodied may lead the Church. Certainly, at the age of 85 and having seres the Church so well, it should not be a shock. Even before his election in 2005, he had expressed interest to retire from his position and to live the rest of his days in prayer and study. Certainly not a decision that he made lightly, he made it with profound humility and love. As we witness a conclave begin to elect his successor, we pray that the Holy Spirit will lead the cardinals to the right candidate who will boldly proclaim our faith. As of 1 pm on the 28th, we will no longer refer to Pope Benedict in the Eucharistic prayer, and with Catholics across the world, pray for the election of a new Pope.
Perhaps it is most appropriate that we enter the season of Lent with this prayer intention in addition to our 'normal' Lenten prayer. This is a season of self-denial and penance, when we, like Jesus Christ enter the desert of fasting and prayer. What will we find there? Perhaps a new temptation against which Christ is strengthening us; perhaps a new awareness of His love for us; it might be growth in a virtue. Whatever it is that Christ has prepared for us, let us walk boldly through this desert of Lent!

Pastor's Notes for February 10
Dear Parishioners,
Our Sympathy to Fran and Larry Pitzl family on the death of their son-in-law Terry Harrington. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
This weekend is World Marriage Day (the second Sunday of February). It gives us yet another chance to thank God for the gift of marriage in which man and woman unite themselves in a partnership for life for the good of children. The still recent vote to define marriage thus, and the potential legislative action to redefine marriage as a sort of legal recognition of sexual partners (and little more), reminds us that this is not as self-evident as once thought. I am so pleased that there is a day to formally praise God, and to thank those husbands and wives who have lived the mystery of marriage in their lives and many years together. As a reminder, I am more than willing to give a formal blessing of married couples on your anniversaries, even if you are not having anything 'formal' otherwise. We need to continue to promote healthy marriages as the antidote to divorce, adultery, abuse, in addition to the attempted redefinition efforts. Just call me!
This Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, and Ash Wednesday is a day of fast for those 18-59 years of age, and abstinence from meat (as is Good Friday) for all over 14. Every Friday of Lent is also a day of abstinence. Fasting means one normal meal with perhaps two smaller meals as needed. Abstinence is for meat, but not necessarily of dairy, eggs, or foods made with animal fats. This Lenten season calls us to other acts of penance and almsgiving, too. These next few days, we should all take some time to reflect on areas of our lives that need Christ's healing, and chose a penance appropriate.

Pastor's Notes for February 3
Dear Parishioners,
Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Lucille Ahrens. May she rest in peace. Her funeral will be Monday at 11 at St. Mary's, with visitation an hour prior. Note that there will not be a luncheon per family wishes.
This last week certainly was a busy one for our students and staff at St. Anne's School. I am so glad that we have this week to focus on the unique contributions of Catholic Education. With the Carnival this weekend, I am sure that we will really celebrate with fun and games. Thanks again, Dawn, Penny, Angie L and Shannon, Angie D, Connie, Tara, Vickie, Candy, Deb, Mary, Rene, Jane, and Kathy for your work commitment, and to all the volunteers like the Education Committee members, Patti and the library helpers, the Lunch room volunteers, and so many more. Certainly, it takes a whole parish/Area Faith Community to have a school. One fact that I heard this week that seems counterintuitive: Parishes with schools are LESS likely to run deficits. I am willing to bet that this has something to do with the whole notion of stewardship. As it takes so many people sharing time and talent to make the school work, it might spill over into the treasure portion of stewardships. Thanks, therefore, for all of your stewardship.
Next Wednesday is the beginning of Lent already. In addition to the lenten practices we have had such as Stations and confessions, we are encouraging you to pray for those who are not regularly practicing the faith. A form will be attached to the bulletin next week.
